Flying from the UK to Lahore: overview

Lahore is Pakistan’s second-largest city and the heart of Punjab, and it pulls in a steady flow of travellers from the UK all year round. Some are visiting family in Lahore itself; many more are heading on to Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Faisalabad or smaller towns across central Punjab. Allama Iqbal International Airport (LHE) is the gateway for most of them.

Compared with Islamabad, Lahore has had a patchier record of non-stop flights from the UK, so the majority of travellers connect through a hub. That is not necessarily a disadvantage: Gulf carriers, Turkish Airlines and Saudi Arabia’s national carrier all compete for this traffic, and on many dates a well-timed one-stop journey is both cheaper and more comfortable than you might expect.

The airport itself is relatively close to the city – on the eastern side, near Cantt and the Defence areas – which makes arrivals easier than at Islamabad’s out-of-town site. That matters if you land in the early hours, which is common on flights connecting through the Gulf.

Check what is actually on sale for your dates rather than relying on what a friend flew last year.

For most travellers, one stop is the realistic choice. Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha and Etihad via Abu Dhabi all connect the UK with Lahore, as do Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, Saudia via Jeddah or Riyadh, Oman Air via Muscat and Gulf Air via Bahrain. With a two- to three-hour connection, the total journey is often around 12–14 hours – only a few hours longer than a non-stop.

The main things to weigh are arrival time and baggage. Many Gulf connections land in Lahore very early in the morning. When to book flights to Lahore

For summer holiday trips, start looking as early as you can and try to book several months ahead. This is the busiest period of the year on UK–Pakistan routes, and the cheaper fare levels on the key dates – the first weekend of the holidays out, the last week of August back – tend to go early.

For Eid, plan around the expected date but allow a margin. Aim to land two or three days before, and consider a fare that allows changes if you want to return soon after. Remember that UK Eid prayers and Pakistani Eid can fall on different days; what matters for your flight is the date in Pakistan.

For December weddings, book as soon as the date is confirmed. This period overlaps with Christmas, and fares for the week before Christmas can climb steeply. If the wedding date is flexible, you may save by travelling in early December or mid-January instead.

Lahore vs Islamabad: which airport to fly into

Lahore and Islamabad are only a few hours apart by motorway, so many travellers have a genuine choice. The right answer depends on where your family lives, how much you are carrying and how you are getting from the airport. For Lahore itself, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Gujranwala and Faisalabad, Lahore is usually more convenient. For Rawalpindi, Mirpur, Jhelum, Chakwal and the north, Islamabad is the obvious choice.

Fares between the two do not always move together. Each airport has a different mix of airlines, and any non-stop service can change the picture for one city and not the other. On busy dates, one airport can sell out while the other still has reasonable seats. It is always worth running both searches before you book.

Think about arrival times too. A cheaper flight into Islamabad that lands at 3am, followed by a long drive to Gujranwala, may not be the better deal compared with a slightly dearer flight into Lahore. Arriving at Allama Iqbal International Airport

Allama Iqbal International Airport is on the eastern side of Lahore, close to Cantt, DHA and the main ring road, so journeys into much of the city are relatively short compared with other big South Asian airports. Traffic in Lahore can be heavy at peak times, though, and weddings and festivals can make it worse.

Many flights from the Gulf arrive in the early morning or late at night. If you are being met, agree a meeting point in advance – arrivals areas can be very busy when several flights land at once. If you are making your own way, ride-hailing apps such as Careem and inDrive operate in Lahore, and there are airport taxis.

In winter, Lahore is sometimes affected by dense fog, especially from late December to January. This can cause delays and diversions, typically to other Pakistani airports. If you are travelling at this time of year, build a little slack into your plans and keep your airline’s app to hand for updates.

Travelling to Lahore with family

Family trips to Lahore often involve several generations and a lot of luggage. When comparing fares, work out the total for your whole group, including any baggage you need to add, rather than looking at the per-person headline price. A fare that looks cheaper for one adult can end up dearer for a family of five once bags are added.

For long connections, look at what the hub offers. Some Gulf airports have family areas, quiet zones and good food options, while shorter connections leave little time for young children to stretch their legs. A two- to three-hour connection is usually the sweet spot: enough to make the connection comfortably, short enough to keep the total time down.

If you are travelling with elderly relatives who need help, request special assistance when you book or at least 48 hours before departure, and mention it for every airport, including the hub. Wheelchair assistance at Gulf hubs is widely available but works best when booked in advance.

Baggage on flights to Lahore

Most people flying to Lahore check in at least one large bag, and many need more. Airlines serving Pakistan have often offered more generous economy allowances than on their European routes, but this depends on the fare type and changes over time. Understand whether your fare uses a piece concept (a set number of bags, each with a maximum weight) or a weight concept (a total weight, however many bags). On a piece allowance, one bag that goes over the per-bag limit can cost more than an extra bag would, so spread weight evenly between bags.
